WebUse a straight edge and put it over 7-8-9 frets at the E string, you should be able to see then if the 8 fret is a bit higher than the 7 and 9, the it must be filed down to be level. If they're already level, could be that the buzzing isn't from the string but from something vibrating with the string at that exact frequency (resonance)

Clamp the neck into a back bow, then tighten the nut. This way the clamp does the work, not the nut, and you can't break anything.
